Want to know how much you can save with cloth diapers?
...Cloth Planet is here to help!
Before you nvest in cloth diapers, you want to know how much you can
save by using cloth diapers. Cloth diaper costs will vary based on how
often you do laundry and what style of diapers you choose.
One of the best diaper cost comparison charts I have seen is
here
on the Diaper Decisions site. They break down each type of diaper and
the costs for disposables. According to their calculations disposables
will cost you $2,500 or so from birth to potty training. Their figures
are based on the two lowest priced brand names from two discount
retailers. You can pay a bit less for dispsoables from a warehouse club
or by buying an off brand. In that case you will likely spend about
$2,000 or more for disposable diapers.
Here is what cloth diapers will cost you based on my diaper prices.
Pocket Diaper Cost Comparison
48
Happy Heiny
pocket diapers and microfiber inserts (24 small, 24 medium) (most
babies never get big enough to use a large before they potty train and
many newborns are big enough to use a small diaper from the start or at
least by a few weeks old).
Two small 12 packs $179.40 plus $48 (24) for microfiber inserts $406.80
Two medium 12 packs $179.40 plus $48 (24) for microfiber inserts $406.80
Total pocket diaper cost
$813.60.
You save $1200-1700 over the
cost of disposables. You can reuse the diapers for a second child and
save a total of $3,186-$3,600. You can also sell used diapers to recoup
some of your cost. If you choose
Drybees or
Little for Now pocket diapers you will save even more. If you prefer to have 36 diapers in rotation you'll pay a few hundred dollars more.
Prefolds and Covers
24 infant prefolds $36
24 baby prefolds $48
4 small diaper covers $44
4 medium diaper covers $44
4 large diaper covers $44
Total prefold and cover cost
$216
You save $1800-2300 over the
cost of disposables for one child. Use them on two kids and you save
$3,800-4,800. You will pay a little more if you choose a name brand
such as Thirsties prefolds. Adding a dozen diapers in each size will
cost you a little more but will make sure you have extras as a
backup.
Organic Diapers
24
One Size Organic Ecobaby Diapers $300
3 Small Wool Covers $60
3 Medium Wool Covers $60
3 Large Wool Covers $60
Total Cost
$480
You save $1400-2100 over the cost of disposables. Reuse them for a
second child and save $3,520 - $4,520. Again, adding a dozen extras can
make it easier to make sure there are always clean diapers.
What about the cost of washing cloth diapers?
Washing cloth diapers adds about $0.01 per diaper change to your cost.
Hardly enough to break the bank. You can save more by line drying your
diapers (works best for pocket diapers). Wool covers should always be
air dryed.
